GameCamp!'s mission is to help students develop a successful path for achieving their career goals, specifically in the game industry. We designed GameCamp! to help motivate students to understand that all successful careers take hard work and planning just like the hard work and planning it takes to win at the games they play. Our strategy for delivering this experience is three-fold: First, we introduce students to the game industry through our summer camps where they get to play, learn and work with other like-minded students. Students get to meet real game developers, participate in projects that require team work, learn public speaking and leadership skills, develop critical thinking, and get an understanding of the value of education. All of these things go beyond just a career in video game development, it is essential preparation for life in a high-tech world with a rapidly changing job market. Second, we work directly with colleges and universities to bring information to students to help them plan for continuing their education beyond high school. Students love games, but often don't understand how important getting an education is to succeeding in our global job market, whether that is in games or any digital media industry. Games motivate students and we use that motivation to help them bridge the gap between education and choosing a successful and desirable career. Third, we focus on getting students a real world understanding of the game industry through projects, internships, and networking. It is our belief that the earlier students learn about the important tools, processes, techniques, people, and companies the better prepared and more motivated they will be to make important career choices. Most importantly, we teach them valuable skills that are portable across all professions; working in teams, confidence in presenting information, solving complex problems, properly allocating time and resources, and balance between play, learning, and work. |
